Arabic vs Contemporary Majlis Style: A Comprehensive Guide
In the vibrant cultural tapestry of the UAE, the Majlis holds a special place, serving as a vital space for gatherings, discussions, and hospitality. The debate between Arabic and contemporary Majlis styles reflects varying interpretations of tradition and modernity in home design. Understanding these two styles can help homeowners in the UAE create inviting spaces that honor their heritage while embracing modern living.
Understanding the Majlis
What is a Majlis?
A Majlis is traditionally a place where family and friends come together to socialize, discuss important matters, or simply enjoy each other's company. It signifies hospitality and community in Emirati culture, often designed to be both comfortable and welcoming.
Historical context and cultural importance
Historically, the Majlis has evolved from simple tent-like structures in the desert to elaborate rooms in modern homes. This evolution mirrors the social changes in Emirati society, where the Majlis now serves as a reflection of personal style and cultural heritage. In contemporary homes, it remains a focal point, often designed to facilitate conversation and connection.

Characteristics of Arabic Majlis Style
Arabic Majlis style is deeply rooted in tradition, characterized by specific architectural elements and decor that convey warmth and richness.
Architectural features
Typical Arabic Majlis designs feature high ceilings, grand arches, and intricate woodwork. The layout often includes a central seating area with low cushions and traditional carpets, emphasizing a communal atmosphere.
Color schemes and materials
Rich, earthy tones dominate the color palette, often complemented by vibrant textiles and intricate patterns. Materials like wood, stone, and ceramics create a tactile experience that invites guests to linger.
Furniture and layout
Low seating arrangements are common, encouraging an intimate setting for conversation. Traditional Arabic furniture, such as intricately carved tables and plush cushions, enhances comfort while maintaining aesthetic appeal.
Characteristics of Contemporary Majlis Style
Contemporary Majlis design offers a fresh take on traditional elements, often prioritizing minimalism and functionality.
Minimalism and functionality
In a contemporary setting, the Majlis may adopt a more streamlined look, with clean lines and uncluttered spaces. The focus shifts to creating a functional area that suits modern lifestyles while retaining the essence of the Majlis.
Use of technology in design
Modern Majlis spaces may incorporate technology, such as integrated sound systems and smart lighting, enhancing the overall experience. This fusion of comfort and convenience is particularly appealing to younger generations.
Trends in color and material
Contemporary Majlis designs often favor neutral color palettes, punctuated with bold accents. Materials like glass and metal are increasingly used, providing a sophisticated contrast to traditional textiles.
Blending Arabic and Contemporary Styles
Successfully integrating both Arabic and contemporary styles can create a unique Majlis that honors tradition while embracing modernity.
Creating a cohesive look
To achieve a cohesive design, it’s essential to find a balance between both styles. Choose a few traditional elements, such as Arabic-patterned cushions, and pair them with contemporary furniture pieces. This approach allows for a harmonious blend that respects cultural significance while appealing to modern sensibilities.
Choosing the right elements
Incorporate traditional items, like a handcrafted coffee table or ornate lighting fixtures, alongside contemporary designs. This juxtaposition can elevate the space, making it both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Examples of blended designs
Consider a Dubai villa that features a sleek, modern Majlis with low-profile sofas accented by colorful, traditional throw pillows. A striking piece of art can serve as a focal point, bridging the gap between the two styles while ensuring the room remains inviting.
